MOTO2 - A NEW ERA BEGINS

Moto2 was created to replace the 250GP class. The aim was for a competitive World Championship that would offer exciting racing for the fans and a valid stepping stone to MotoGP for the riders.

With the new Moto2 class of 2010, Dunlop enters a new era. New-century racing conventions and regulations have eliminated tyre competition in many motorsport disciplines, including Formula 1, World Rally Championship, MotoGP and World Superbikes. Moto2 is the latest, and Dunlop won the contract to supply identical tyres to every competitor for 2010-2012.

The replacement of the pure prototype 250cc 2-stroke class Moto2 requires all competitors to use identical Honda 600cc four-stroke engines, but opens the door to a large number of specialist chassis manufacturers. This bold new approach for the “finishing school” class of GP racing should provide a much more level playing field and really close racing.

Equality in tyres is a goal of this new class. Dunlop will provide all riders with a choice of two different “A” and specification “B” tyres front and rear, pre-selected by the company’s expert tyre engineers for each circuit. Dunlop engineers have years of experience and reams of data from all the established circuits on which to base the choice.

Some circuits will require ‘dual’ tyres, with different compounds on the left and right shoulders and, in some special cases (like Australia’s Phillip Island) also possibly asymmetric construction.

It is up to Dunlop to select the tyre specifications for each race: a maximum of 16 slick tyres may be used per race weekend. All tyres will be barcoded and allocated on the day before practice starts to each rider by the Technical Director.
